On Friday morning the club was deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Paul Walsh, Rhue, in Sydney, Australia. Paul was a valued member and player with our club, playing at corner back before emigrating to Australia. The club would like to offer sincere condolences to his mother Elizabeth, brother John and all of the extended Walsh and Gilmartin families, neighbours and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh siad.
As a mark of respect, many club fixtures were postponed this weekend.
Our U-14 girls completed back to back wins at the county Feile when they were crowned Feile County Champions on Saturday. The girls started their Feile campaign on Saturday the 26th of March when they competed in the South Division stage in Tourlestrane. Our girls overcame Curry in the encounter on a scoreline of 9-27 to 1-0. The results sent the green and gold through to the final stages which took place on Saturday last. The team faced St. Molaise Gaels in the final with our girls getting off to the perfect start. A goal from the throw in paved the way to retaining the Feile title. St. Molaise continued to battle hard and put it up to our girls in the second half but our girls held on to finish out the game on a score of 4-09 to 3-02.
The team and their mentors will now start preparing for the National Feile Finals 2016 which will held in West Munster at the end of June. Congratulations to all players, mentors and parents involved with this hugely talented team of girls.
Our Junior football team got their Division 4 league campaign off to a winning start on Sunday morning when they defeated Owenmore Gaels on a score of 1-13 to 0-4 in Collooney. A superb second half goal by Michael Meers sealed their victory. Prior to the game a minutes silence was observed in memory of former player Paul Walsh.
The 27 man winning squad was Padraig McVeigh, Shane Neary, Darren Leonard, Enda Gallagher, John Paul Lang, Colm McVeigh, Niall Durkin, James Curley (capt), Darren O’Hara, Brian Walsh (Carane), Barry Kirrane, Tom Brennan, Daniel Clarke, Ciaran Walsh, Ruairi Brennan, Rian Kennedy, Brian Walsh (Castlerock), Michael Meers, Paul Meers, Matthew Lang, Sean Quinn, Diarmuid Brennan, Eamonn Coyne, Gearoid Brennan, Barry Brennan, Gerry McGowan and Eamonn O’Hara. The team's next outing is at home fixture against St Farnan’s.
Our Senior Hurlers got off to a winning start in their defence of the Dermot Molloy League with a 2 point win against Carrick Hurling Club on a score of 0-11 to 0-9 in Tourlestrane recently. The team take on Western Gaels in round 2 this Saturday at 6pm in Tourlestrane.
Our Senior Footballers also got off to a winning start in their defence of the Division 1 League when they overcame Shamrock Gaels on a score of 2-15 to 0-8 in Tourlestrane recently. The team travel to Calry on Sunday for round 2 of the league, throw in is at 2pm.
Our U-14 boys have started their league campaign very brightly. In their opening game of the season, they put on a great display of determination and commitment in a tough physical encounter with Calry St. Josephs. Despite the wet and heavy condition, the boys in green and gold managed to get crucial goals and drew on a scoreline of 3-6 to 1-12. Goals weren't a problem in the second outing of the league when the travelling side put 4 past the St. John's team. Our boys running out winners on score of 4-13 to 2-7 on Thursday last.
Our Minor boys start their league campaign on Monday when they host Ballymote in the opening round of the Divison 2 league.
Also starting their league campaign this week is our U-8/U-10 team when they travel to Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry on Wednesday.
Thank you to all our club members and supporters who attended our hugely successful Monster Club Quiz on Good Friday. With over 200 participants and over 30 volunteers, a great night was had by all. Thanks also to the Fundraising Committee for all their hard work in organising the event. The upcoming Vintage Run which was due to take place on the 17th of April has been postponed until further notice.
Hard luck to both Sligo Ladies who suffered defeat at the hands of Cavan. Our club was represented by Katie Walsh and Anna Corcoran.
